The Gleam Baroque Orchestra

The Gleam Baroque Orchestra

The Gleam Baroque Orchestra is formed by Taiwanese Early Music specialists active across Europe and North America, performing on full period-instrument Baroque and Classical orchestral forces. It is one of Taiwan’s few professional ensembles dedicated to historically informed performances of eighteenth-century chamber and orchestral repertoire.

Europe’s thriving Early Music environment has nurtured many outstanding Taiwanese musicians, who now appear internationally as soloists, concertmasters, and principal players. Members of the orchestra have received prizes at major competitions—including the Bruges International Competition, the Telemann Competition, and the Biagio Marini Competition—and have recorded for leading Early Music labels, marking a new generation of Taiwanese presence on the global Early Music stage.

Guided by a commitment to historical musicology, the Gleam Baroque Orchestra grounds its work in primary-source research, organology, stylistic study, and period performance practice. The ensemble seeks to restore the sound worlds, rhetoric, and expressive depth of Baroque music as they might have been understood at the time of their creation.

The orchestra specializes in a wide range of large-scale Baroque repertoire, including concertos, Handel operas and oratorios, Bach cantatas, Classical-era masses, and eighteenth-century orchestral and instrumental works. Its performances employ historically appropriate orchestral forces to recreate the vivid sonorities and textures of early eighteenth-century music.

To cultivate a robust and high-level Baroque orchestral environment in Taiwan, the ensemble also operates the Gleam Historical Performance Workshops, offering training in Baroque technique and high-level coaching for emerging Baroque string players—an effort aimed at building a truly Taiwan-rooted, historically informed Baroque orchestra.

Today, the Gleam Baroque Orchestra has become the principal professional platform for Taiwanese Baroque musicians returning from Europe, dedicated to presenting the beauty of Baroque music through an authentic historical lens and to advancing the development of Early Music in Taiwan within an international context.
